Hip hop gets some love this November with the first KL Hip Hop Festival. Organized by The Reach Event, the fest has been touted as a symposium for the who’s who in Asian hip hop, bringing together artistes from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore … even to as far as the United States. Taking place from noon to 2am, artistes like Joe Flizzow, Phlowtron, KLG Sqawd, 4Dub, Soul ID, Diplomats International, Ras Muhamad, Phatnatrix have already signed up for more than an appearance. True blue lovers of hip hop will also rejoice over the presence of Akil from the Los Angeles rap group, Jurassic 5! There’s more to the fest than the performances at its Outdoor Stage of course.

The fest has an aim to showcase the different facets of today’s urban culture and thus, have organized more activities to add to the festivities. There’ll be workshops going on for aspiring rappers, DJs, graffiti artists and breakdancers by selected facilitators from the industry – great for those in need of a crash course and those wanting to hone their craft. The more confident can step up and participate in mini competitions held throughout the day in areas like turntablism or breakdancing. And what’s a fest without bites and threads? The food market at the fest will see a variety of soul food on sale – cornbread with dahl anyone? – and for those wanting to look the part of a hip hop star, their bazaar will be hard to resist with vendors selling the latest in streetwear, blingin’ accessories, and more. With host Altimet and DJ Goldfish wrapping up the night, you can bet that anyone who calls themselves a hip hop fan in this town will be there. KL Hip Hop Fest takes place at Modestos, Desa Sri Hartamas on 15 November, 12pm.

This documentary was produced by students in Chapman’s new interdisciplinary International Documentary program, led by Professor Jeff Swimmer, which sends students around the world with cameras to profile leading human rights and development organizations. Thanks to a $1 million anonymous gift, participating students traveled to Cambodia this past summer with Professor Swimmer and School of Law Professor John Hall. They represented Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, the School of Law and Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences. While in Cambodia, they filmed two non-governmental organizations that use dance in their outreach. This completed film will be submitted to festivals and distributed to TV networks to raise awareness, and will be made available to the dance companies for their promotional needs.

The Tiny Toones dancers are led by Tuy “Kay-Kay” Sobil, who grew up in Long Beach but now teaches hip-hop dance to Cambodian street kids, providing support and self-esteem to children who otherwise lack role models and are at risk to become drug users, dropouts or sex workers. The second part of the Chapman film project features Sopheline Cheam Shapiro, who emigrated from Cambodia to Long Beach in 1991 and opened the Khmer Arts Academy there in 2002. She offers a dance immersion program in Takhmao, Cambodia in the summers. In the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge “killing fields,” most Cambodian master dancers were either dead or had fled the country, so Shapiro’s efforts have helped develop a whole new generation of classical dancers in her native country.

Crown J, an LA born Korean rapper, has come a long way in his career from being Just another celebrity guest on “X Man” to one of the stars of “We Got Married.”

Recently, Crown J was on Yoon Do Hyun’s Love Letter where he entered the show with a performance of his new single “Fly Boy“. During the performance he pulled out dollar bills with his face on it and threw them all over the stage.

After the performance, Yoon Do Hyun asked Crown J what was different about his style of hip hop and Crown J answered,

“In America, the East is very critical of the raps, while the West is into the scary gangster feeling rap, but the style I am pursuing is the southern style of rap. The lyrics have a positive mindset and you will see that through the expression of my lyrics.”

I took a history of hip hop class and I learned that the southern style of rap has very little lyrics and a heavy emphasis on beat. A classic southern hip hop artist is Lil’ John and positive is not the first word that pops into my head when I hear his lyrics but you can decide for yourself. Shows how much Crown J knows.

I don’t know why he is trying to be something he is not (from the South). When I first heard him say “A” I was so confused but I realized he changed the meaning of “A” from Atlanta to LA… -_-. Crown J is Wankster #1 but I got to admit his songs are catchy as hell. ‘Cuz baby I’m so so fly!!!!
