The Asian Urban Alliance

Hip hop gets some love this November with the first KL Hip Hop Festival. Organized by The Reach Event, the fest has been touted as a symposium for the who’s who in Asian hip hop, bringing together artistes from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore … even to as far as the United States. Taking place from noon to 2am, artistes like Joe Flizzow, Phlowtron, KLG Sqawd, 4Dub, Soul ID, Diplomats International, Ras Muhamad, Phatnatrix have already signed up for more than an appearance. True blue lovers of hip hop will also rejoice over the presence of Akil from the Los Angeles rap group, Jurassic 5! There’s more to the fest than the performances at its Outdoor Stage of course.

The fest has an aim to showcase the different facets of today’s urban culture and thus, have organized more activities to add to the festivities. There’ll be workshops going on for aspiring rappers, DJs, graffiti artists and breakdancers by selected facilitators from the industry – great for those in need of a crash course and those wanting to hone their craft. The more confident can step up and participate in mini competitions held throughout the day in areas like turntablism or breakdancing. And what’s a fest without bites and threads? The food market at the fest will see a variety of soul food on sale – cornbread with dahl anyone? – and for those wanting to look the part of a hip hop star, their bazaar will be hard to resist with vendors selling the latest in streetwear, blingin’ accessories, and more. With host Altimet and DJ Goldfish wrapping up the night, you can bet that anyone who calls themselves a hip hop fan in this town will be there. KL Hip Hop Fest takes place at Modestos, Desa Sri Hartamas on 15 November, 12pm.
